Join us in shaping the mobility transition!

KNIPPING KUNSTSTOFFTECHNIK represents over 60 years of successful family-owned business history. In our facilities in Germany, Hungary, and Mexico, we develop and produce plastic parts and assemblies, mainly from thermoplastics and thermosets. Our customers include renowned companies in the automotive and electronics industries.

One of our strengths is our constant redefinition and realignment. These strengths are particularly valuable in times of transformation towards e-mobility. One of the technologies that will play an important role in this transformation is the hydrogen PEM fuel cell. Advantages of the hydrogen PEM fuel cell include high ranges and short refueling times.

This has prompted KNIPPING to establish a new business division called KNIPPING NEW MOBILITY. The focus of KNIPPING NEW MOBILITY is on the development of Balance-of-Plant (BoP) components for the cathode subsystem of a fuel cell system. The primary focus initially is on developing a humidifier.

INTERNSHIP/MASTER THESIS “Design and Optimization of Fuel Cell Humidifier Housing” (M/W/D)

The objective of this Internship/Master Thesis is to re-design and optimize the existing housing of the humidifier of a PEMFC. Key is to integrate a media connector, which guaranties flexibility in representing variants like “single” and “twin”; “single” means one humidification cartridge and “twin” two cartridges. In addition, the media connector consists not only of the I/O interfaces, but also housing, by-pass and valves. Optimization goals are a flexible concept, the homogeneity of the pressure distribution which is transferred from the end plates of the cartridges to the distribution plates, low weight, and efficient manufacturing process. The optimization result shall be built by 3D-Printing and be tested.

Main Tasks:

  •     Research on state of the art of science and technology
  •     Development of an optimized humidifier cartridge housing and media connector
  •     Validation by means of FEM and CFD analyses
  •     Define manufacturing process and build a sample by 3D-printing
  •     Experimental characterization of the new design
  •     Documentation of results (in either English or German)

Your Profile:

  •          Currently doing a Masters in Mechanical, Plastics Technology or Process Engineering
  • A good understanding of plastics design
  • A good understanding of fluid and thermodynamics
  • Experience of Design Tools like CATIA or any other design tool
  • Knowledge of FEA simulation tools like ANSOFT or any other simulation tool; meshing softwares (Ansa, Ansys Meshing)
  • Ability to breakdown a complex problem and to define steps to solve it
  • Being able to work independantly and pro-actively but also to be able communicate efficiently and accurately with other team members and teams
